Since I am a new user of the Linux and the Communities therein, I find this type of book fascinating. My husband has worked in and around Linux and the various communities since the early 90's but, it always seemed a foreign concept to me. Something that me (average user mom) would not be able to use . However in just a few short weeks I have grown to appreciate the diverse yet collective group of people orbiting around the common goal of keeping software free and open, so that whether you hold a Ph.d or you're a kid still in High School or somewhere in between, there is a place for you in the in the communities. It seems to me that the best thing about the communities are that you don't have to have the technical skills to write the operating system, you could be a user who just likes to help, and there are plenty of people to mentor you, or a wiki page to help you figure it out.
Jono - Just a personal THANK YOU, for pointing me in the direction of so many new and wonderful things for a new user like me to read and participate in.
Can't wait to read the finished product.... Best Wishes!

It's clear that in the United States volunteerism is much more important and obvious than in Europe.
People in the States seem much more eager to do something together without getting paid for it. Maybe it's a remainder of the time when the country was still being colonized and people had to work together in order to survive.

It probably is an explanation for the large amount of American contributors to opensource projects, especially at important positions.
